Standard, EFB or AGM battery?
Standard batteries suit vehicles specified for conventional technology. EFB and AGM support more demanding systems, including start-stop. If your vehicle requires AGM, replace it with AGM. Do not replace EFB or AGM with a standard battery. Always check any technology change against the vehicle’s requirements.
When is a standard battery sufficient?
Choose a conventional lead-acid battery when specified by the vehicle manufacturer. An inactive start-stop system alone is not a reason to change technology. Check the original specification, rather than relying only on the battery currently installed.
Why does start-stop use EFB or AGM?
Frequent engine starts and supplying electrical equipment during stops increase battery demands. EFB and AGM are designed for these conditions. AGM is also used in more demanding energy management systems, including braking energy recovery.
Check the technology before replacement
Replace a specified AGM battery with AGM. Do not replace EFB with a standard battery. Check whether upgrading from EFB to AGM is permitted for your particular vehicle, including any registration or energy management adaptation required.
Can I fit a standard battery if I switch off start-stop?
Switching off start-stop does not change the vehicle manufacturer's requirements. Keep the specified technology and check the specification before replacement.
